Clean and Drinkable Water for Everyone
in Umuokpoko, Isu LGA, Imo State.
The world has made great strides in development, but for some communities, life seems to be moving in reverse. In places like Umuokpoko, each day brings new hardship, and hope feels like a luxury unless someone chooses to stand up and make a difference.
Growing up in my village, hardship was all I knew. We fetched water from a nearby pond, cloudy, muddy water we had no choice but to use. We would let the dirt settle, then use it for everything: washing clothes, bathing, and sifting cassava. Rainwater from zinc rooftops was stored in special containers for drinking, but no one ever questioned its safety. We didn’t know any better, and even now, many still don’t because they have no other option.
Years later, I traveled abroad. I got an education, and saw what clean water could mean to a life. But when I returned home after decades away, I was heartbroken. That pond we once relied on had dried up. My mother was still drinking contaminated water and she had developed painful rashes because of it. I started sending her money to buy clean water. That small act saved her from further harm.
In 2018, I lost her.
Her death left a question echoing in my mind:
“If you could provide clean water for your own mother, what about those who have no one?”
That question sparked a dream to build a borehole in Umuokpoko. But dreams alone don’t change lives. Turning that vision into reality proved harder than I imagined. I partnered with a colleague to find an organization that could help, but without the right connections, every door seemed closed.
Yet I refuse to give up. Because every human being deserves access to something as basic and as vital as clean water.
Your support can bring clean water to an entire community.
Let’s make sure no one else has to suffer or die for something as simple as a drink of water
